The Japanese Forest Society

Who We Are

The Japanese Forest Society (JFS) is a scientific and professional organization founded in 1914, and has more than 2,000 individuals and institutional members. Today’s environmental and resources problems range from local to global scales and indicate that forests play an essential role by regulating carbon, water, sediment, and nutrients flows, and by providing wood products, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities. The JFS’s main objectives are to advance both forest science and forestry, to support human well-being and culture by identifying and solving environmental and resources problems, and to contribute to the sustainable development of human society.

Publications and Awards

The JFS supports communication among members devoted to studying forest science and forestry issues, covering all aspects of an interdisciplinary science, including biology, ecology, hydrology, environmental science and socio-economy.

To meet the above objectives, the society organizes annual meetings and publishes three scientific journals —
Journal of Forest Research (in English),
Journal of the Japanese Forest Society (in Japanese with English summary) and
Forest Science (Shinrin Kagaku) (in Japanese).

To honor members for the excellent research articles published in the two former journals, the society has an award program named Journal of Forest Research Award (JFR Award) and Journal of the Japanese Forest Society Award in addition to other awards; Japanese Forest Society Award, Japanese Forest Society Young Investigator Award, Japanese Forest Society Outstanding Contribution Award, Japanese Forest Society Student Award, and Japanese Forest Society Student Poster Award.
