A comparative analysis of forest carbon offset projects under the Korea Forest Carbon Offset Scheme and Verified Carbon Standard

Forest management activities play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by both reducing carbon emissions and increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) storage. The purpose of this study is to compare the methodology for Improved Forest Management through the Extension of Rotation Age between the Korea Forest Carbon Offset Scheme(KFCOS) and the Verified Carbon Standard(VCS). It further estimates CO2 sequestration and conducts economic assessments under various scenarios. Diverse forest management scenarios were analyzed to assess their capacity for maximizing carbon stocks and economic returns, revealing distinctions between the KFCOS and the VCS. The findings contribute to understanding and optimizing the effectiveness of these schemes in promoting sustainable forest management practices with environmental and economic benefits. |
