Seawater crystal deposition in the stomata of Pinus thunbergii needles

Seawater crystal deposition was investigated in the stomata of Pinus thunbergii needles growing in the coastal area of Pohang, Korea. Samples were collected from both asymptomatic and brown needles, air-dried, and prepared for field-emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. Both asymptomatic and brown needles had seawater salt crystals randomly deposited on the surface. Seawater crystals of varying sizes were found in the stomatal chambers and on the apertures of the Florin rings. Sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) were widespread on the needles, mostly co-localized within the crystals. The NaCl crystal depositions in the stomatal chambers suggested the stomatal penetration by seawater in the needles of P. thunbergii. These results provide insights into the initial phase of seawater salt-induced injury through the stomatal pathway in coastal pine species. |
