Nighttime water use between two woody species in Korea

The study was conducted in Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, in the Republic of Korea, from March to December 2020 to compare the nighttime water use strategies between Pinus densiflora and Quercus serrata. Environmental variables and sap flow density were measured. The nighttime sap flow of Q. serrata was significantly higher than that of P. densiflora. The highest nighttime sap flows of Q. serrata and P. densiflora were 12.2 kg H2O d-1 in May and 1.6 kg H2O d-1 in April, respectively. The proportion of nighttime to diurnal sap flow of Q. serrata was about twice as high as that of P. densiflora. Vapor pressure deficit was only positively correlated to Q. serrata’s nighttime sap flow, indicating that the nighttime sap flow of Q. serrata consisted of stem refilling and nocturnal transpiration. |
