要旨本文	The Goyogawa River is a man-made waterway that was constructed in 1620 as part of the Utsunomiya Castle Town Development Plan. It played an important role in the city, transporting timber and rice, as well as water for agriculture, but it also caused extensive damage to the city center when the Kinugawa River flooded. Despite the fact that this river is extremely important for Utsunomiya City, it has not been given a high administrative profile, and no academic knowledge has been accumulated on it. This study shows the urban development of Utsunomiya from the aspect of water use by clarifying the relationship between water transportation and water use of the Goyogawa River and flooding of the Kinugawa River, based on historical materials.
